If You’re Going to Do One Thing in Dubrovnik…

Despite the sea of people and intense heat, Dubrovnik is one of the most beautiful cities I have visited. Especially when seen from a certain angle: from above.
If you’re going to do one thing in Dubrovnik, I would walk along city walls. The whole old city is surrounded by these defensive walls and forts which run interrupted for 1,940 metres, and you can walk around the whole of it. Of course, if the heat gets too much there are a number of exits along the wall. We were lucky enough to be accompanied by a light breeze; I’m not sure how well I would have handled the heat otherwise!
Seeing Dubrovnik from a completely different angle was more wonderful than I could have ever imagined.
As well as the walls, another form of protection was provided by Fort Lovrijenac, a separate fortress. It is now used as a theatre during the summer months.
We stopped at a cafe along our wander for some fresh orange juice. It wasn’t as pricey as I expected, 75 Kuna for 2 glasses, and the views- priceless.
Dubrovnik was the filming location for many scenes of King’s Landing in Game of Thrones. You may recognise some of the sights from the series as you look over King’s Landing, ahem Dubrovnik. If you’re a huge GOT fan I would definitely recommend a Game of Thrones guided tour.
At certain points of the wall it is possible to see the nearby Lokrum Island.
Practical information: to enter the city walls the cost is 70 Kuna for an adult. Euros are not accepted so make sure you have some Croatian Kunas ready. There are a few cafes along the way but it’s probably a good idea to come prepared with a couple of bottles of water
